Cookie policy – Motorracingtips.com
Few technical tools run on Motorracingtips.com, and this policy names them, gives their purpose and says how choices about them can be made. A cookie is a small text file stored by a browser on a device; local and session storage entries and counting pixels behave in much the same way.
What the law asks
Regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 (PECR) governs the matter. Storing information on a user’s device, or gaining access to information already there, requires clear and comprehensive information and the user’s consent, unless the storage is strictly necessary to provide a service the user has requested. Consent follows the UK GDPR standard (Article 4(11) and Article 7): freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous, and as easy to withdraw as to give. Where cookies lead to the processing of personal data, the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply too.
Set without a choice
A few files are indispensable. They hold a session open, balance load between servers, guard forms against abuse and record the cookie decision itself. No separate choice is asked for these. Session files vanish when the browser closes, and the recorded decision lasts no more than twelve months.
Set only after consent
Functional files remember settings, such as the comparison tables opened last. Analytics files count page views and show which pages are read, which helps to improve the content. Both groups wait for consent in the cookie banner. Addresses are shortened before analysis, and no profile following behaviour across different sites is built.
Outside services
Embedded videos or maps from outside providers may set files of their own, and the provider’s privacy rules then apply; an objection is raised with that provider. Motorracingtips.com sets no advertising cookies that build profiles for personalised ads without a clear choice in the consent banner.
Changing or withdrawing consent
The “Cookie settings” link in the footer allows consent to be changed or withdrawn at any time. Withdrawal works for the future and does not affect the lawfulness of earlier processing. Browsers also let their users block and delete cookies. Once the necessary files are deleted, the banner returns and some features may briefly stop working.
Complaints
A complaint about the handling of personal data goes to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s supervisory authority. How personal data is processed is set out in the privacy policy of this site.
